The past year was full of noteworthy achievements both on and off the court in the USTA Pacific Northwest (USTA/PNW). Record numbers in USTA membership and tennis program participation along with individual and team national championships are just a few of the many highlights witnessed in 2008. The section's accomplishments didn't go unnoticed by the national tennis community as Racquet Sports Industry magazine named the USTA/PNW its 2008 USTA Section of the Year. In 2009, the USTA national office will offer a $200-$500 grant to at least 100 local Tennis Block Party hosts to be used for marketing and promotion of the event. USTA Tennis Block Parties are events designed to expose new players to the sport in a fun and entertaining atmosphere. They feature interactive games for all ages and ability levels and offer participants the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the game – from fun and competition to social and fitness benefits. The USTA Pacific Northwest fielded two teams in the fifth annual Pacific Cup and one emerged victorious defeating four-time and defending champion Southern California to claim the 2009 Pacific Cup championship. The juniors who formed the Pacific Northwest team put together an amazing weekend of tennis where they edged a talented Southern California team to win the title by just four games. Also representing the section and performing well at this year’s Pacific Cup was British Columbia. The team from Northern California rounded out the field of four.
